Dead Space Remake Developer Livestream

Writer: John.PJohn.P

Last month EA announced the remake of a beloved horror franchise known as Dead Space, since then we had a teaser trailer and the news it was officially in development with Motive.

Not an awful lot was known in regards to the anticipated remake since its announcement in July 2021 but fans were very eager to see what was to come, thankfully Motive and EA provided a developer insight this week to ease fans concerns and get everyone just a smidge excited.

The most amazing part of the show for us was a direct comparison of the original 2008 sci-fi horror in comparison to a mere alpha build of the remake. Showing how all the new technology such as ambient occlusion, RTX and more has helped shape a highly detailed environment and even Isaac himself. It really goes to show how far gaming has come in the last 13 years to bring something that previously was incredible for the time, that later became dated back to its former glory in a whole new way for us to enjoy.

I have to give Motive incredible respect for even showing us a behind the scenes build for the developers in house use too. An aspect of raising the curtain and letting the fans know that they are aware of the project and what it means to people.

During the demonstration they showcased a whole new flesh peeling technology and gameplay mechanic that has been implemented for the remake, watch in full here. In short it looked incredible, lets you exposed bone/flesh for weak points and added further gory detail to an already isolated and horrific title, it will be great to use this once the game releases and tear those beasts apart limb from limb.

Gunner Wright

Another treat was the announcement that the original Isaac Clarke voice actor himself Gunner Wright (Dead Space 2 & 3) will be returning in a smaller capacity to voice Isaac at key moments in the game. The developers know the importance of narrative, dialogue and keeping a tense feeling so they actually confirmed Isaac will only speak when spoken to or in certain key points of the story. This helps keep the original feeling but add the connection with the character further I feel.

Further more Motive mentioned that the Dead Space remake will feature ZERO microtransactions, unlike its counterpart Dead Space 3 which was disliked by fans thanks to EA's implementation of allowing players to buy crafting parts in a horror title.

Narrative will remain unchanged also, as they are more than aware how fans adored the story and they would not want to change that. They did mention adding to it in various ways such as Isaacs wife being more prominent in his search and linking other media like the animated movies and comics into the story via audio logs, easter eggs and such. However they promise the backbone of the original 2008 Dead Space will be largely unchanged.

New concept art was shown which looked fantastic, fresh ways to explore the Ishimura ship itself were also discussed and even a zero gravity overhaul akin to its sequel Dead Space 2 has been added. A common through point mentioned during the developer update live stream was that Motive understands the IP, its fan base and the need for the horror genre to keep its isolated tone within the Dead Space franchise. We hope to hear further details in 2022 when we should be closer to a release date window and possibly a date if we are lucky, however keep in mind we are still in a global pandemic affecting many industries so lets all give Motive time to perfect this remake!
