Considering my co-writer, Jontis’ piece on the new update for No Mans Sky, I felt some very positive news is needed to finish it off.
To say the game’s launch in August 2016 was a disaster is an understatement. Review bombs, death threats, lies. Hello Games had a massive issue on their hands. Reviews were horrible to lacklustre, and it had a “mostly negative” rating all around on Steam. Staying silent for a few months also didn’t look good for the devs until…Foundation. In November 2016 we saw the Foundation update. The game still had a long way to go but it was a start. As more and more updates launched like Next, which brought the game to Xbox One, and Beyond, which brought multiplayer, made the game more like what Hello Games wanted on release. However, that “Mostly Negative” all-time rating was still haunting them, but that was changing…more and more positive ratings were arriving and silencing the negative reviews of old, showing a more true reflection of what the game was like.
With the release of Frontiers just a few days ago, the game finally got the “mostly positive” rating it now deserves and has deserved for many updates now. The game can only go further and further. Comparing its first few months to now, the game is completely different and a much better game. The redemption of No Mans Sky is great. And I’m glad it’s finally where it belongs. Let’s see what the future holds.
